Funerals at Aberdeen South Church

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted”
Matthew 5:4

At a time of loss, you need as much support as you can get. We are here to help in those situations, working in partnership with you, your family and your funeral director. We have a lot of experience of helping people through their loss and grief, acknowledging that a bereavement is often a deeply painful experience.

We also know the importance of the funeral service as a moment for individuals, families and a community to come together to pay their respects to a loved one and to recognise with thanksgiving the life of that person. It is a step along the way as we say our farewells and can be very helpful as a moment both to celebrate the life of your loved one and to start the process of healing our broken hearts.

  • No. Our care and concern is for all those who live within our parish, whether a church member or not and whether you have faith or not.

  • Services can take place at Aberdeen South Church, a crematorium, the Funeral Director’s own chapel or at the graveside.

  • If you wish for Aberdeen South Church to be involved, then please let your Funeral Director know and they will get in touch with us to make arrangements.

Normally, either the minister, Reverend Dr. Edmond Gatima, or anyone who has received training as a Church of Scotland Funeral Celebrant will conduct the service.

  • The person conducting the service will meet with you to talk about the service and your loved one’s life. They will help you to decide on the content of the service.

If a family member or friend wishes to, for example, give the eulogy, read a poem, sing a song or play a musical piece in tribute, you will be given guidance on how these can best be incorporated into the service.

  • We have a full audio-visual system, meaning we can show photographs and videos as part of the service. It can be very powerful to show photographs at suitable points in the service and the process of talking through your loved one’s life and choosing appropriate photographs with our church representative can also be very therapeutic for family and friends.

Unfortunately we do not have the facility to live stream the service online but Aberdeen Crematorium does have that facility.

  • There is no fee or costs associated with the services of the minister but a Funeral Celebrant might charge a fee.

If the funeral service is held in the church building, there is no fee for the funeral of a church member but for non church members there will be a fee of £200.

For everyone, there will be fees for the other people involved in delivering the service; organist (tbc) and church officer (£50).

Your chosen funeral director will liaise with the church to confirm all costs.

  • Each year in November, an evening Bereavement Service is held for everyone who wants to remember a loved one. During the service, candles are lit in their memory.
